A whitetail arrow for short-range woods hunting is not the same decision as an arrow built around long open shots or larger animals. Start by deciding what the arrow needs to do: how far you really shoot, what you hunt, how much bow you are pulling, how much trajectory you can give up, and how much penetration margin you want.

Arrow Building Terms Made Simple

If you are newer to building hunting arrows, use these definitions when a calculator, guide, or tuning step starts to feel too technical. These are the terms that matter most before you start changing parts.

  • Finished Arrow Weight: The total weight of the complete arrow, including shaft, insert, broadhead or field point, vanes, nock, wrap, and anything else installed.
  • GPI: Grains per inch. This tells you how much the bare arrow shaft weighs for each inch of length.
  • GPP: Grains per pound. This compares finished arrow weight to your bow’s draw weight.
  • Spine: How stiff the arrow shaft is. The wrong spine can make a good arrow build hard to tune.
  • Dynamic Spine: How the arrow actually reacts when shot from your bow with your draw weight, arrow length, point weight, and components.
  • FOC: Front of center. This shows how much of the arrow’s weight is carried toward the front.
  • KE: Kinetic energy. A speed-and-weight number that helps describe energy at impact.
  • Momentum: A weight-and-speed number that helps explain penetration potential.
  • Broadhead Flight: How well your broadhead-tipped arrows hit compared to your field points.
  • Tuning: Adjusting the bow and arrow setup so the arrow leaves the bow cleanly and flies consistently.
