Compound bows rarely start shooting badly for no reason. A screw loosens, a rest moves, a string settles, a cable changes, an arrow is damaged, or the shooter changes something without realizing it.
The hard part is not always fixing the problem. It is identifying what actually changed without creating three more problems in the process.
This guide provides a systematic way to diagnose common compound bow problems. Start with the simple checks, make one change at a time, and verify the result before moving on.
The Compound Bow Troubleshooting Process
- Observe: Define exactly what changed.
- Inspect: Look for damage, movement, or loose hardware.
- Isolate: Identify the most likely cause.
- Correct: Make one appropriate adjustment.
- Confirm: Shoot again and verify the result.
Do not move the rest, adjust the sight, twist cables, change arrows, and change your grip all at once. If the problem disappears, you will not know which correction worked. If it gets worse, you will not know which adjustment caused it.

Tools I Keep for Compound Bow Problems
You do not need a complete bow shop in your truck. These are the basic tools I keep available for loose hardware, string maintenance, broadhead work, and simple field repairs.

For a More Complete Home Bow Setup
I use the OMP Tech Starter Tool Kit when I need more than a basic field adjustment. I am a big fan of October Mountain Products because the build quality has been much better than most of the bow tools I have tried. This kit costs more than a simple carry kit, but it gives me a stronger home setup for regular maintenance and bow-sight work.
For sight work and more precise checks, I now use the OMP Versa-Cradle Bow Vise. It replaced the cheaper vise I used to recommend. The better build quality and secure hold make basic maintenance, bow-sight leveling, and repeatable setup work easier at home.
These tools are for inspection and basic adjustments; not limb, cam, cable, or structural repairs.
My Peep Sight Will Not Line Up
A peep that suddenly rotates is usually a symptom, not the original problem. Common causes include a new string settling, string stretch, cable movement, or a change in cam timing.
First, confirm that your anchor and head position have not changed. Then inspect the string and cables. If the string is new, it may need additional shots to settle before the peep receives a final adjustment. If the string is older and rotation appeared suddenly, look for wear or a larger setup change.
Do not solve peep rotation by twisting your head or changing your anchor. That turns an equipment issue into a form problem.
My Compound Bow Suddenly Became Noisy
A new noise is one of the easiest problems to notice and one of the hardest to locate. Start by checking everything attached to the bow.
- Sight and sight pins
- Arrow rest and launcher
- Stabilizer and weights
- Quiver and hood
- String stop and rubber bumper
- Limb and string dampeners
- Module and draw-stop screws
- Wrist sling hardware
Remove loose accessories one at a time when practical and shoot again. Many mysterious noises come from a quiver, stabilizer weight, sight component, or rest part that has started vibrating.
Quick hardware check: I use a compact NAP Allen wrench set to check the sight, rest, quiver, stabilizer, and other accessories one at a time.
If the noise is sharp, violent, or accompanied by a different shot feel, stop shooting and inspect the limbs, string, cables, cams, and arrows.
My Broadheads Will Not Group With Field Points
Broadheads create more steering force than field points. That makes them less forgiving of tuning and form problems. If broadheads and field points do not group together, do not assume the broadhead is defective.
Check these areas:
- Arrow spine and total setup
- Nock fit and nock height
- Rest alignment and centershot
- Vane clearance
- Cam timing
- Broadhead alignment and arrow condition
- Grip torque and shooting form
Begin with a sound basic tune using paper tuning, then make small broadhead-tuning adjustments. Move the rest in very small increments and document what you changed. You can also fine-tune arrow flight using different field-point weights with this technique.

My Groups Suddenly Opened Up
If a bow that was shooting well suddenly produces large groups, assume something changed. Start with equipment before changing your sight.
- Inspect every arrow and nock.
- Check the sight, rest, and stabilizer for movement.
- Confirm the peep is aligned.
- Verify the D-loop has not moved.
- Check draw-module and draw-stop screws.
- Confirm the string and cables are in good condition.
- Ask whether you changed release, grip, anchor, clothing, or draw weight.
Shoot at a close distance and concentrate on execution. If groups remain poor, use another known-good arrow and inspect the equipment again. Do not chase impacts with the sight until the groups are consistent.
My Bow Feels Different at Full Draw
A change in draw length, valley, holding weight, or back-wall feel often points toward the string, cables, modules, draw stops, or cam timing.
Inspect module and stop screws before drawing the bow again. Look for string and cable damage and compare the current module settings with the correct settings for your draw length.
If the bow suddenly wants to pull forward, the stops no longer contact together, or the draw length changed, have the timing and string system checked. Those corrections often require a press and should not be improvised.
My Arrows Keep Hitting Left or Right
A consistent left or right impact may be a sight adjustment. An inconsistent left or right pattern is more likely related to grip torque, anchor, release execution, rest contact, or arrow setup.
Before moving the sight, confirm that the group is tight. If the arrows form a good group away from the aiming point, move the sight toward the group. If the impacts spread horizontally, work through grip pressure, anchor, peep alignment, and release execution first.
My Arrows Keep Hitting High or Low
Consistent high or low groups can be corrected with the sight. Vertical spreading often points toward inconsistent anchor, changing bow-arm pressure, improper draw length, range-estimation errors, or fatigue.

My Vanes Are Contacting the Rest or Cables
Vane contact creates inconsistent arrow flight and can be difficult to see without testing. Apply foot powder or another safe contact indicator to the rest and nearby areas, shoot, and look for a clean contact mark.
Check rest timing, launcher position, arrow rotation, cable clearance, nock height, and centershot. Make small corrections. Do not rotate the nock or move the rest randomly without documenting the starting position.

My Compound Bow Will Not Tune
When a bow will not respond to normal tuning adjustments, return to the foundation.
- Confirm the bow fits the shooter.
- Confirm the arrow spine and components match the bow.
- Return rest position and nock height to a reasonable starting point.
- Verify cam timing and draw-stop contact.
- Check cam alignment and cable clearance.
- Eliminate vane contact.
- Confirm the shooter is not introducing torque.
If you have reached extreme rest positions or repeated cable adjustments without a clean result, stop. A qualified technician can often identify a setup or alignment problem much faster than continued guessing.
What Should I Do After a Dry Fire?
Stop shooting immediately. A dry fire forces the bow to absorb energy that would normally be carried away by the arrow. Damage may involve the string, cables, cams, axles, limbs, modules, or accessories, and it may not be obvious.
Do not draw the bow again to see whether it feels normal. Secure it carefully and take it to a qualified bow technician for a complete inspection.
An Underweight Arrow Can Act Like a Partial Dry Fire
A bow also needs an arrow that is heavy enough to absorb the energy it was designed to deliver. Always follow the minimum arrow-weight requirement published by the manufacturer for your exact bow and settings. These limits are commonly expressed as grains per pound, or GPP, based on the bow’s actual draw weight.
For example, if the manufacturer specifies a 5 GPP minimum, a bow pulling 70 pounds requires an arrow weighing at least 350 grains: 70 × 5 = 350. Use the bow’s measured draw weight rather than assuming the number printed on the limb is exact.
An arrow below the published minimum cannot carry away enough of the bow’s stored energy. That leaves more energy in the limbs, cams, string, and cables and can act like a partial dry fire. It can damage the bow and may affect warranty coverage.

Mathews is one manufacturer that has specified a 5 GPP minimum in its bow guidance. Do not treat 5 GPP as a universal rule. Check the current owner’s manual for your exact bow or contact the manufacturer because the minimum can vary by manufacturer and model.
If you accidentally shoot an arrow below the required minimum, stop and inspect the bow. If the shot sounded or felt abnormal, or you are unsure whether damage occurred, have a qualified technician evaluate it before shooting again.
When Should You Stop Shooting and Visit a Bow Shop?
- Suspected limb damage
- Broken string or cable strands
- Cam, axle, or bearing damage
- A dry fire or partial dry fire
- Sudden changes in draw length or back wall
- Timing work requiring a bow press
- String or cable replacement
- A problem you cannot identify confidently
A compound bow stores a tremendous amount of energy. There is no reason to risk injury or expensive damage to avoid asking for help.
