Compound Bow Maintenance Checklist: What to Inspect and When

A compound bow does not need constant attention, but it does need regular inspection. Most equipment problems do not appear all at once. A serving begins to separate, a screw works loose, a D-loop starts to fray, or a rest moves slightly after hundreds of shots.

The goal of compound bow maintenance is not to turn every hunter into a bow technician. It is to recognize small problems before they affect accuracy, damage equipment, or create a safety issue.

I use a simple inspection schedule: a quick check before shooting, a more thorough check during periods of heavy use, and a complete evaluation before hunting season. This checklist explains what I inspect, why it matters, and when the bow should go to a qualified shop.

Before shooting, inspect these ten areas:

  1. Bowstring and serving
  2. Control cables
  3. D-loop and nocking point
  4. Limbs and limb pockets
  5. Cams, modules, and draw stops
  6. Arrow rest
  7. Bow sight and peep sight
  8. Stabilizer, quiver, and other hardware
  9. Arrows, nocks, vanes, and broadheads
  10. Point of impact and broadhead flight

If something looks, sounds, or feels different, stop and determine why. Do not keep shooting and hope the problem goes away.

Compound Bow Maintenance Inspection Checklist

Before Every Shooting Session

A quick inspection should take less than two minutes. You are not trying to retune the bow before every practice session. You are looking for anything that changed since the last time you shot.

Inspect the Bowstring and Cables

Look for broken strands, fuzzy areas, serving separation, flattening, and unusual wear around the cams, cable slide, roller guard, and string stop. Pay particular attention to contact points because that is where wear often appears first.

A little surface fuzz does not automatically mean the string has failed, but exposed or broken strands deserve immediate attention. If you are unsure, have a technician inspect it before shooting.

Check the D-Loop and Nocking Area

The D-loop receives stress every time you draw the bow. Check it for fraying, flattening, loose knots, or movement on the string. Also make sure the nock fits the center serving correctly and is not pinching or falling off too easily.

A D-loop is inexpensive and easy for a shop to replace. Waiting until it fails can damage equipment or cause an injury.

Look Over the Limbs and Cams

Inspect the limbs for cracks, splinters, deep gouges, or signs of delamination. Look at the cams from behind the bow and note anything that appears bent, damaged, or dramatically out of alignment.

Do not run your bare fingers aggressively across a damaged-looking limb. Small fibers can be sharp. If you suspect structural damage, stop shooting and take the bow to a qualified technician.

Check Accessories and Hardware

Confirm that the sight, rest, stabilizer, quiver, wrist sling, and string stop are secure. You do not need to overtighten everything before every session. A visual and physical check is usually enough to catch a component that is beginning to move.

Pay attention to witness marks if you use them. A small paint or pencil mark across a screw and mounting surface makes movement easier to see.

Inspect Every Arrow

Check the shaft, nock, vanes, insert, and point. Carbon arrows should be flexed and inspected according to the manufacturer’s directions. Replace cracked nocks and damaged shafts immediately.

The bow may be perfectly maintained and still become unsafe if the arrow is damaged.

Bow Maintenance Tools to Keep on Hand

Most bow problems are small problems—until you are a mile from the truck or a buck is standing in front of you. I keep a simple maintenance kit with me during the season and a more complete kit in camp or in the truck.

My Allen wrench multi-tool is the one item that always stays with me. It lets me check a loose sight, rest, quiver, stabilizer, or accessory screw before a small issue becomes a ruined hunt.

  • Serving material and a serving tool
  • D-loop pliers and extra D-loop cord
  • Nock pliers
  • Arrow squaring tool and hot-melt or insert adhesive, if you build arrows
  • A bow case or cover to keep rain, dirt, and loose gear off the bow

My OMP Home Bow Workstation

For maintenance at home, I use October Mountain Products equipment. I am a big fan of OMP because its build quality has been much better than most of the bow tools I have tried. This setup is not cheap, but it feels solid, holds the bow securely, and gives me a much better platform for sight leveling and regular maintenance.

Do not try to make major cam, cable, timing, or draw-length changes in the field. The goal is to handle a loose accessory or small wear issue, not turn a hunt into a full bow-shop repair.

Monthly Inspection During Heavy Use

If you shoot several times each week, perform a more detailed inspection every few weeks. The exact interval matters less than developing a routine you will actually follow.

  • Inspect the full length of the string and cables.
  • Check serving around the cams and center serving.
  • Confirm module and draw-stop screws are secure.
  • Inspect cable slides or rollers for wear.
  • Check peep alignment and height.
  • Confirm rest timing and launcher condition.
  • Check sight axes, pins, tape, and mounting hardware.
  • Confirm stabilizer and quiver hardware remain tight.

Waxing a Compound Bow String

Apply bowstring wax to exposed string fibers when they begin to look dry. Use a small amount and work it into the fibers with your fingers or a soft piece of leather. Friction creates heat, so do not become aggressive.

Do not wax the serving, D-loop, cables where the manufacturer advises against it, or areas that run through cam tracks and rollers unless the string maker specifies otherwise. Wax protects exposed fibers; it does not repair a damaged string.

Preseason Compound Bow Checklist

Before hunting season, I want more than a bow that appears undamaged. I want to confirm that the complete setup still fits, tunes, and shoots the way it should.

  • Verify draw weight.
  • Confirm draw length and module settings.
  • Check cam timing and draw-stop contact.
  • Verify centershot and nock height.
  • Confirm peep alignment at a natural anchor.
  • Check rest timing and vane clearance.
  • Verify sight marks at hunting distances.
  • Inspect every hunting arrow and broadhead.
  • Confirm broadheads and field points group together.
  • Shoot while wearing the clothing and safety equipment you will hunt in.

If the bow has not been professionally inspected in several seasons, preseason is a good time to have a shop check the string and cables, timing, cam alignment, and limb condition.

Compound Bow Maintenance Schedule

Maintenance During Hunting Season

Hunting adds moisture, dirt, temperature changes, travel, and impacts that do not occur on a controlled range. Inspect the bow after a hard bump, a fall, heavy rain, a muddy hunt, or extended travel.

Dry the bow at room temperature. Wipe moisture from metal surfaces and accessories, but do not place the bow beside a heater or use extreme heat. Check the sight, rest, quiver, and point of impact before returning to the woods.

I also shoot at least a few arrows after transporting the bow a long distance. The goal is not more practice. It is verification.

End-of-Season Cleaning and Storage

At the end of the season, remove dirt, leaves, blood, and moisture from the riser, limbs, cams, and accessories. Inspect the string, cables, D-loop, arrows, and broadheads before putting everything away.

Store the bow in a dry location with reasonably stable temperatures. Avoid hot vehicles, damp basements, and places where the bow can be knocked over or have weight placed on it. A protective case is useful, but do not seal a wet bow in a case and forget about it.

When Should You Replace Compound Bow Strings and Cables?

There is no single replacement interval that applies to every hunter. Shooting volume, string quality, climate, storage, maintenance, and cam design all affect service life.

Replace strings and cables when inspection or performance indicates it is time. Warning signs include broken strands, severe fuzzing, serving separation, repeated peep rotation, changing draw length, timing changes, or visible damage at contact points.

Many active hunters replace a set every two or three years, but that is a general planning interval, not a guarantee. A heavily used or damaged string may need replacement much sooner.

What Maintenance Can You Do Yourself?

Most hunters can safely inspect the bow, wax exposed string fibers, tighten accessible accessory hardware, clean equipment, replace arrows and nocks, and make normal sight adjustments.

Work involving a bow press, limb removal, string or cable replacement, cam timing, axle replacement, or structural damage requires the correct tools and knowledge. If you do not know exactly what the stored energy in the bow will do when a component is removed, take it to a shop.

Compound Bow Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid

  • Continuing to shoot after the bow suddenly feels or sounds different
  • Overtightening accessory screws
  • Ignoring minor limb damage
  • Using heat to dry the bow
  • Applying wax to serving or mechanical components
  • Changing several tuning adjustments at once
  • Waiting until opening week to inspect the setup
  • Assuming arrows are safe because the bow is safe

Reliable Equipment Starts With a Simple Routine

Good maintenance is not about obsessing over the bow. It is about removing avoidable problems before they affect the hunt.

Inspect the bow before shooting, perform a more complete check during heavy use, verify the entire system before hunting season, and store it correctly when the season ends. That routine will catch most problems while they are still easy to fix.

Replace worn equipment before it fails, not after it costs you an opportunity.

How often should a compound bow be serviced?

Inspect it before every shooting session and perform a detailed preseason check each year. Professional service depends on use and condition. Have it inspected whenever timing, draw feel, noise, point of impact, or string condition changes unexpectedly.

Should I wax my compound bow string?

Yes. Apply a small amount of bowstring wax to dry exposed fibers and work it in gently. Do not wax serving or use wax to hide damage.

Can I leave a compound bow in a vehicle?

Avoid storing it in a vehicle, especially during extreme heat or cold. Temperature changes can affect strings, cables, adhesives, accessories, and lubricants. Transport it when necessary, but store it in a controlled, dry location.

Should I loosen the limb bolts for storage?

No. A modern compound bow is designed to remain strung and set at its normal draw weight. Do not change limb-bolt settings simply for storage.
