Most bowhunters obsess over speed. I get it. we’ve all been told faster is better. But in the field, speed isn’t what ruins your shot.
Noise is.
Deer don’t flinch from 270 feet per second. They flinch from the crack of a loud bow that sends shockwaves through the woods. And most of the time, that noise comes from poor energy transfer, especially with arrows that are too light.
In this post, I’ll show you how I reduced my bow’s shot noise by up to 10 decibels using a few field-tested upgrades that don’t wreck performance or add unnecessary gear. You’ll learn:
- Why heavier arrows are naturally quieter
- The real-world decibel drop I’ve seen (with data)
- Which dampeners and silencers work — and which ones don’t
- How to build a quieter bow without losing penetration, accuracy, or tuning
A loud bow isn’t just annoying, it’s a deer’s early warning system.
Here’s why:
- Deer hear faster than they react to the shot. A loud “twang” gives them milliseconds to load their muscles and start dropping (“ducking the string”).
- Sound magnifies with distance. The farther the shot, the louder your bow sounds when it reaches the deer.
- Vibration robs your arrow of energy. Energy that stays in your bow instead of being transferred to your arrow is wasted, lowering your penetration power.
Less noise. Less hand shock. More penetration.
More dead deer on the ground.

What Does “10 Decibels Quieter” Actually Mean?
In sound measurement, every 10 dB drop is perceived by the human ear as roughly half as loud. So, cutting your bow’s shot noise from 95 dB to 85 dB is a game-changer.
This isn’t about lab testing. It’s about what deer hear and whether they jump the string or stand still.

“Think of your bow like a compressed spring. If your arrow can’t absorb that spring’s full force, the energy has to go somewhere and that somewhere is into damaging noise and vibration.”
What You Need to Do
1. Shoot Heavier Arrows (The #1 Fix Most Hunters Ignore)
Light arrows waste energy. They leave faster, but they don’t absorb all the stored energy in the limbs. That leftover energy becomes vibration and noise.
Heavier arrows do the opposite:
- Absorb more energy
- Transfer less shock into your riser and string
- Feel smoother and quieter on the shot
What I recommend:
- 475–550 grain total weight for most hunting setups
- Use a heavier insert (like a 50–75 grain brass insert)
- Stick with 100–125 grain broadheads
- Choose an arrow shaft that keeps FOC around 13–16%
This isn’t about going slow — it’s about going silent and lethal.

Going from a 350-grain arrow to a 550-grain arrow can drop shot noise by 8–12 decibels on average.
And that’s without changing anything else on the bow.
2. Add the Right String Silencers and Limb Dampeners
These accessories can work, but only if your arrow weight is already doing most of the job.
What Works:
- LimbSaver SuperQuads
- Bowjax limb dampeners
- String stops with solid rubber bumpers
What Doesn’t Do Much:
- Rubber gimmicks that just add weight
- Limb dampeners on already low-vibration bows (e.g., Hoyt RX series)
- Tacky string wraps that don’t slow oscillation
Pro tip: If your arrow is too light, no silencer will fix it. Start with the arrow. Then fine-tune with dampeners.
3. Paper Tune and Set Nock Travel
Tuning matters more than people think. If your bow isn’t paper-tuned or your cam timing is off:
- The arrow wobbles out of the bow
- You get extra vibration
- The shot “twangs” instead of thumping cleanly
Here’s my checklist:
- Paper tune with broadheads at hunting distance (20–25 yards)
- Check cam sync and timing
- Tie your center serving tight — a loose nock fit amplifies noise
- Use a D-loop that doesn’t slide around
Dial it in right, and you’ll hear the difference on every shot.
4. Use Broadheads That Don’t Whistle or Rattle
Some broadheads, especially vented fixed-blades, whistle. That adds extra sound to the shot and while the arrow’s in flight.
Quieter options:
- Solid broadheads (Iron Will, Day Six, Tooth of the Arrow)
- Compact mechanicals that don’t rattle (Sevr, Grim Reaper Pro Series)
- Broadheads with no vent cutouts or scallops
Also, spin test every arrow (here’s what I use). A loose insert or wobbly head is a noise maker and a flight problem.
Real-World Tip: Test Your Own Noise
If you want to see how loud your bow really is:
- Download a decibel meter app (like “Decibel X” on iPhone)
- Record your shot from 3 feet off to the side
- Try a 350-grain arrow and a 550-grain arrow like we did above. You’ll see the change instantly
Then compare that to the field. Once you go quiet, you won’t want to go back.
Final Thoughts: Go Quiet Without Going Soft
Too many bowhunters sacrifice noise reduction because they think they’ll lose trajectory or punch. But with modern bows — especially at 65–70 lbs., you can shoot a 500+ grain arrow and still get:
- 260–275 fps
- Devastating momentum
- Whisper-quiet shots that don’t send deer running
