I keep hearing that whitetail deer have an incredible sense of smell because of their second nose.  Is this true?

No. Deer do not have a second nose, but they do possess a specialized organ called the vomeronasal organ (VNO), or Jacobson's organ, which plays a crucial role in their ability to analyze and separate individual components within a single scent. The VNO is located in their nasal cavity and works in conjunction with their regular olfactory system, significantly enhancing their sense of smell.
