Most mapping-app tutorials show you where the buttons are. That is useful, but it does not teach you how to turn scouting information into a hunt plan.
I use onX Hunt as an evidence board. Terrain, access, bedding, rubs, scrapes, trail cameras, observation hunts, pressure, wind, and timing all go onto the same map. Then I run that evidence through my Kill Zone Mapping system and build three planned decisions instead of betting the hunt on one stand.
This guide walks through that complete process. It starts with a terrain theory, adds evidence in stages, scores the opportunity from 0–10, and finishes with a Primary, Pivot, and Wait/Observe plan.
I use onX Hunt throughout this example, but the same Kill Zone Mapping process can be used with other hunting-map apps.
About This Case Study
“North Ridge” is a realistic composite example based on the type of public-land terrain and deer sign I hunt in the Northeast. I changed the terrain, dates, and locations so this does not expose an active hunting area. The purpose is to teach the process, not give away a spot.
What onX Hunt Does—and What It Does Not Do
onX Hunt helps me organize information. Its waypoints can hold colors, icons, notes, and photos. Its desktop map gives me a larger screen for e-scouting, while saved map content syncs to the mobile app for field use. Tracker can record where I walked, and the topo, satellite, and hybrid basemaps help me compare terrain and cover.
But onX does not prove that a mature buck is bedding in a particular spot. It does not know if a scrape was opened last night, if hunting pressure changed a travel route, or if a forecasted wind will survive the last 200 yards. Those conclusions still require scouting, observation, judgment, and testing.
The map is where I store the evidence. Kill Zone Mapping is how I evaluate it.
Can You Use Another Hunting Map App?
Yes. I use onX Hunt in this example because it gives me the mapping, waypoint, note, photo, route, wind, and offline tools I need in one place. But Kill Zone Mapping is not an onX feature, and the system is not locked to one app.
You can use another hunting app—or even a paper map and scouting notebook—if it lets you organize the evidence clearly. You need a way to mark terrain, bedding or security cover, sign, trail cameras, observation points, hunter pressure, access routes, wind plans, and suspected deer movement.
The app holds the information. Kill Zone Mapping helps you decide what that information means. Use the tool you trust and will consistently update in the field.
Build a Consistent onX Waypoint System First
A map becomes confusing fast when every waypoint uses a random color. I use one color system so I can understand the map without opening every note. The exact onX icons can change with the situation, but the colors stay consistent.

- Red: bedding or security cover
- Gold or yellow: rubs, scrapes, and other buck sign
- Blue: trail cameras or photographed movement
- White: confirmed deer travel
- Orange: hunter access or pressure
- Green: planned entry, exit, and hunt decisions
- Purple: observation or glassing locations
- Dark boundary: the proposed Kill Zone
- Dashed route: suspected movement that still needs proof
- Solid route: movement supported by stronger evidence
I also put dates and short facts in my waypoint notes. “Old rub” is less useful than “three large historical rubs found March 3 along the leeward side of the ridge.” The second note tells me what I found, when I found it, and how much confidence I should place in it.
The North Ridge Example
The starting theory is simple. A ridge drops toward thicker security cover. A terrain pinch appears to connect the upper ridge to a lower travel corridor. Historical rubs and an active scrape have been found in the general area. Two trail cameras about 500 yards apart have photographed mature bucks, and a low-impact observation location offers a way to watch movement without entering the suspected Kill Zone.
None of that proves where to hunt. It gives us a theory worth testing.
Map 1: Start With a Terrain Hypothesis

I begin on the larger desktop map and compare topo, satellite, and hybrid views. I look for terrain and cover features that may influence movement: ridge points, benches, saddles, creek crossings, steep barriers, thick cover, cuts, and likely access routes.
For North Ridge, I mark two suspected bedding areas and the parking or access point. I then draw a dashed movement theory through the terrain pinch. Dashed matters. I have not earned enough confidence to call it a confirmed deer route.
Evidence question: What terrain feature am I testing, and what would prove or disprove the theory?
Map 2: Add Ground Scouting Evidence

Next, I add what I found on the ground. In this example, winter and early-spring scouting found a historical rub line along the ridge. Later scouting identified a primary scrape hub near the terrain pinch.
Historical sign matters because mature bucks may use the same terrain pattern across multiple years. But old rubs are not a promise. I want to know if fresh sign, tracks, beds, trails, droppings, hair, and current scrape activity support the same pattern.
This is why I like scouting after the season. Leaves are down, last fall’s rubs and scrapes are still visible, and I can move through an area without worrying about ruining tomorrow’s hunt. The knowledge becomes part of the next season’s starting point.
Mike’s rule: Historical knowledge gives you a head start. Current evidence decides how much confidence it deserves today.
Map 3: Add Cameras and Observation Hunts

Two cameras can tell a more useful story than one camera placed directly over a scrape. Camera A is near the upper ridge. Camera B is about 500 yards away near the lower corridor. When the same buck, or bucks in the same age class, appear on both cameras, the time stamps can suggest direction and timing.
That still does not mean the buck walked a straight line between the cameras. The map gives me several possible routes. Tracks, terrain, wind, and later observations help narrow them.
The purple observation point is outside the suspected Kill Zone. It gives me a low-impact way to watch the ridge during a marginal condition. An observation hunt is not wasted time. It can confirm when deer enter the area, reveal a route I missed, or tell me that the current theory is wrong.

Map 4: Account for Pressure, Access, and Security Cover

This is where many map plans fall apart. A stand can be close to bedding, sign, and camera activity and still be a poor hunt because the entry route crosses the movement you need. Your wind may look fine at the stand while your scent washes through the lower trail, parking area, or security cover.
I mark the obvious parking access in orange and consider where other hunters are likely to walk. I also mark the thick refuge area that may receive more deer use after pressure increases. Then I compare several entry and exit routes.
The dark boundary is the proposed Kill Zone—the area where terrain, sign, movement evidence, pressure, and a workable hunting approach begin to overlap. It is not a magic circle and it is not a fixed stand location. It is the area that deserves the next level of evaluation.
The 100-yard radius shown around the primary setup is only a planning tool. It helps me judge relationships and distances on the map. It does not mean the entire circle is equally huntable.
Map 5: Score the Kill Zone Mapping Opportunity

Now I move from map marks to a decision. The Kill Zone Mapping score uses five layers. Each layer receives 0, 1, or 2 points:
- Terrain + Access: 2 — the terrain pinch is useful and at least one low-impact approach appears workable.
- On-the-Ground Sign: 1 — the rub line and scrape hub support the theory, but not all sign has been confirmed as current.
- Trail Camera / Observation Intel: 2 — two cameras and an observation location provide repeated movement evidence.
- Pressure + Refuge: 2 — the pressure routes and security cover create a logical refuge and travel relationship.
- Timing + Wind Alignment: 1 — the late-October timing is promising, but the wind and thermal behavior still need field confirmation.
Total: 8/10. That places North Ridge in the “Ready for 3 Hunt Plan” range because no layer scored zero. If one layer were zero, I would not force the hunt just because the total looked good. That missing layer would become the next scouting or observation priority.
Map 6: Build the Primary, Pivot, and Wait/Observe Plan

The point of the system is not to find one perfect stand. The point is to arrive with three decisions already built.
Hunt 1: Primary
The primary setup targets the terrain pinch during the late-October scrape window. It requires the planned wind and thermal behavior to keep scent away from the bedding and expected travel route. Entry must be quiet and completed before movement reaches the ridge.
Hunt 2: Wind Pivot
If the wind is wrong at the parking area or fails the milkweed check near the hunt, I do not force Hunt 1. I move to a different setup that protects the main Kill Zone while still giving me a chance to intercept movement under the actual wind.
Hunt 3: Wait/Observe
If neither active setup is safe, I wait, observe, or still-hunt outside the sensitive area. An observation hunt can verify movement for a better wind day. A careful still-hunt can become a scout-to-hunt if I find hot sign, or it can tell me to back out before I spread scent through the area.
That new information goes back onto the map. It may create tomorrow’s Primary plan, change the Pivot, or lower the Kill Zone score. The system is a cycle because deer patterns, hunting pressure, food, cover, and mature buck behavior can change.
Hunt the Sign, Not the Spot
The map may start with a spot, but the final decision must be based on current evidence and conditions. If the sign, wind, pressure, or timing no longer supports the plan, change the plan.
How I Use onX in the Field
- Download the map before leaving service. Offline access matters in mountain hollows and remote public land.
- Turn on Tracker during scouting. It records the path, distance, and elevation and helps separate confirmed travel from a theory.
- Drop waypoints where evidence is found. Add the date, freshness, wind, direction, and a photo when it helps.
- Mark observation results. A deer sighting, empty evening, changed food source, or new hunter access point can all change the plan.
- Check wind on the map, then verify it on the ground. Forecasted wind is the starting point. Milkweed or another field wind indicator tells me what is actually happening.
- Keep sensitive information private. Hide coordinates, landowner details, and recognizable place names before sharing a screenshot.

The Evidence Log That Makes the Map Useful
Every important waypoint should answer six questions:
- What did I find?
- When did I find it?
- Is it current or historical?
- What does it suggest?
- What remains unconfirmed?
- Did it strengthen or weaken my original theory?
This prevents a common mistake: treating every old waypoint as if it still carries the same value. A scrape waypoint from three years ago can be important historical knowledge. It is not the same as a scrape that was opened yesterday and photographed during daylight under the wind you plan to hunt.
Common onX and Kill Zone Mapping Mistakes
Marking Too Much Without a System
Hundreds of waypoints are not useful if you cannot tell what they mean. Use folders, colors, dates, and short notes. Archive old information instead of letting it cover the current plan.
Confusing a Pin With Proof
A bedding icon means “suspected bedding” until you confirm beds, tracks, cover use, wind advantage, or repeated movement. Label theories clearly so they do not become facts in your mind.
Choosing the Stand Before Studying Access
The best-looking stand on the map may have the worst entry route. Study how you will enter, hunt, and exit before giving the location a high score.
Forcing the Primary Hunt
The Primary plan is not an order. If the real wind, thermals, pressure, or deer movement does not match, use the Pivot or Wait/Observe decision.
Ignoring What Disproves the Theory
Good scouting does not only collect evidence that supports what you want to believe. If cameras go quiet, fresh tracks move to another corridor, or pressure changes the refuge, lower the score and update the map.

Does onX Hunt identify a Kill Zone for me?
No. onX supplies mapping and organization tools. Kill Zone Mapping is the decision process that weighs terrain, sign, cameras or observation, pressure, refuge, timing, wind, and access.
Do I need trail cameras for this system?
No. Cameras can strengthen the evidence, but tracks, sign, glassing, observation hunts, historical knowledge, and repeated field scouting can fill the same layer. Score the evidence you actually have.
Can I use another hunting map app?
Yes. I use onX Hunt here because it supports the map layers, waypoints, notes, photos, folders, tracks, and field workflow shown in the example. The Kill Zone Mapping process is not locked to one app.
How large should a Kill Zone be?
There is no fixed radius. The boundary should cover the overlap you are evaluating, not an arbitrary distance. The 100-yard circle in this example is a measuring aid around the proposed setup, not the definition of the Kill Zone.
When is a location ready for a 3 Hunt Plan?
In my scorecard, an opportunity needs 8–10 points and no zero in any layer. That means the evidence is strong enough to plan three decisions. It still does not guarantee a hunt will happen or a buck will appear.
