How to Find an Arrow’s Stiff Side and Set the Index Vane

I started looking harder at index-vane placement when I realized that “cock vane out” did not answer the whole question. The vanes still have to clear the rest, but the shaft itself may shoot better from one position than another.

Spine alignment gives you a starting position around the shaft. Nock tuning lets you test that position from your bow. Once you find it, you can set the index vane for clearance and fletch the rest of the arrow. I will show you which step to use, when I would skip it, and how broadhead flight fits into the decision.

The short answer

Start with the shaft maker’s instructions. Use its alignment mark when it provides one. A maker may also state that its shaft needs no special indexing. Follow that guidance and set the vanes for rest clearance. With an unmarked shaft, you can find an axis with a rotating spine tester or rotate one bare shaft through several nock positions. Fletch one arrow from the position you choose, check clearance, and shoot the broadhead before you build the whole batch.

What Spine Alignment Means

The spine number printed on an arrow, such as 250, 300, 340, or 400, describes how much the shaft bends during a standard static test. That number does not locate a stiffer side around the wall of one shaft.

Some modern shafts have little change in spine as you rotate them. Altra says its NO SPINE construction removes the need to find and index a stiff side. Easton says a well-made shaft can stay consistent around its circumference, while a shaft with more variation may respond to a different nock position. Those are the makers’ claims and instructions for their shafts. I use them as my starting point, then let the finished arrow and broadhead tell me whether I need more work.

Nock tuning checks the shaft from your bow. Rotating the nock turns the shaft around its axis. You shoot each marked position and keep the one that gives you the best group or paper tear more than once.

Important: The Index Vane Is Not the Nock

The nock clips to the bowstring. The index vane, often called the cock vane, is the different-colored vane that helps you load the arrow the same way each time. Turning the nock changes the shaft’s position around its axis. The spot where you glue the index vane controls how all the vanes pass the rest.

A drop-away rest and a Whisker Biscuit handle the vanes in different ways. A drop-away launcher should leave the vane path before the vanes reach it. Poor timing can still cause contact, so I check it. A Whisker Biscuit stays in contact with the arrow and has openings that affect vane placement. Follow the instructions for your rest instead of forcing one index-vane rule onto every bow.

What You Need

I use the Doghouse FP for field-point practice. I keep broadheads out of it and move to the broadhead-rated BIGshot for the last shooting check.

Method 1: Follow the Shaft Maker’s Mark or Instructions

The maker may have already done the work you are about to repeat. Check the exact shaft model before you put it on a tester.

  1. Identify the exact shaft model and spine. The brand name alone is not enough.
  2. Read the current fletching or indexing instructions from that manufacturer.
  3. If the shaft has a spine/alignment mark, use it as the maker directs.
  4. If the maker says no indexing is required, fletch for rest clearance and move to verification.
  5. Number every arrow so you can track one problem shaft later.

Victory describes rotating-spine testing and unfletched nock tuning in its published guidance. It places the cock vane in relation to the measured weak axis. Your tester may label its readings in another way, so use the instructions for the tool and shaft in front of you. A printed line or one high dial reading has no universal meaning by itself.

Method 2: Use a Rotating Spine Tester

A rotating tester supports the shaft at two points and measures its bend as you turn it. It gives a home builder a measured way to find an axis on an unmarked shaft.

  1. Set up and zero the tester as its manual directs.
  2. Place the same section of the shaft under the indicator every time.
  3. Turn the shaft through one full rotation without rushing the dial.
  4. Watch for high and low readings that return in the same places. Ignore one needle jump.
  5. Use the tool maker’s instructions to identify and mark the stiff or weak axis.
  6. Repeat the full rotation to confirm the mark before you fletch.

Do not assume that the highest reading marks the stiffest side. Dial direction, load direction, and the tool’s scale change what the number means. Mark the axis that repeats, then use the tester manual to identify the stiff and weak sides.

The Coop’s Bowsmith Spine Tester Pro uses spring pressure and roller bearings to help locate the stiff side of a carbon shaft. It can also help you inspect squareness, broadhead spin, and runout. I have no long-term use with this tool. I am listing it for the job it is designed to do.

The Last Chance Archery Revolution Arrow Tuner does another job. It spins and squares arrows, checks straightness with a .001-inch dial indicator, and helps you correct misalignment between the arrow, insert, and broadhead. You still need a rotating spine tester to measure changes around the shaft wall.

Method 3: Nock-Tune an Unfletched Shaft

You can test the shaft from your bow when you do not own a spine tester. You need a safe bow setup and a shot you can repeat. If you are new to bow setup, ask a good shop to check center shot, nocking height, cam timing, and rest timing before you blame the shaft.

  1. Stand about 6 feet from a large target.
  2. Shoot one unfletched shaft through paper. Mark the nock’s starting position.
  3. Rotate the nock 90 degrees and shoot the same shaft again.
  4. Repeat at 180 and 270 degrees.
  5. Choose the orientation that gives the cleanest, most repeatable tear.
  6. Confirm it with at least two more shots before marking the shaft.
  7. Test each hunting shaft. The first arrow’s mark may not fit the whole dozen.

Stop rotating the nock when every position produces the same large tear. Check the bow setup, rest contact, shooting form, and dynamic spine. Four matching bad tears give you no reason to keep searching for a fifth nock position.

Set the Index Vane for Your Rest

Your mark gives you the shaft position. Your rest determines where the vanes can go. Set the nock and jig around both before you glue anything.

My value choice for a beginner: I used the Bohning Pro Class Complete Fletching Tool for a lot of arrows. It does a good job for someone who may fletch a dozen arrows or fewer in a year. I moved to the OMP Phoenix Fletching Jig because I wanted more adjustment and an easier way to repeat a setting. My first job with it was a set of six 475-grain Tooth of the Arrow arrows for my friend Jevin. All six came out clean and consistent. I need more time with the Phoenix before I can compare its long-term use with the Bohning.

  1. Install the nock at the confirmed shaft orientation.
  2. Place the shaft on the bow and look through the vane path.
  3. Follow the rest maker’s orientation instructions.
  4. Set the fletching jig so the index vane becomes your repeatable loading reference.
  5. Fletch one test arrow before committing the whole batch.
  6. Use foot powder, lipstick, or another visible contact check to confirm that the vanes miss the rest, cables, and riser.

My hunting arrow vane guide covers vane height, profile, and three- or four-fletch setups. I use and recommend options such as the AAE Max Stealth, AAE Hybrid 26, and Bohning Blazer combo. Pick a vane that can control your broadhead and clear your rest.

Verify the Finished Hunting Arrow

  1. Spin the finished arrow and make sure the point or broadhead runs true.
  2. Confirm vane clearance.
  3. Paper-tune a new or changed setup, or use it to confirm the launch when results give you a reason.
  4. Compare a bare shaft with fletched arrows if you can shoot a group that makes the test useful.
  5. Group field points at increasing distances.
  6. Finish with broadheads of the same nominal weight as your field points.

I would look at it for a serious home station or a shop where the .001-inch indicator and broadhead-alignment work will earn their keep. The FlightDeck makes more sense if you build one small batch a year.

A good shaft position can help one arrow join the group. You still have to correct a bad spine match, vane contact, loose parts, cam timing, or a broadhead that wobbles. The beginner hunting-arrow tuning guide puts those checks in an order that keeps you from moving the rest to fix one bad arrow.

How This Affects Broadhead Tuning

A fixed-blade broadhead adds steering surface to the front of the arrow. Small errors in launch, clearance, or alignment can move the broadhead group away from your field points.

  • Every broadhead groups in the same wrong place: investigate the bow’s tune, rest position, nocking point, cam timing, form, and dynamic spine.
  • One numbered arrow keeps leaving the group: inspect that arrow’s nock, shaft, insert, broadhead alignment, vanes, contact marks, and shaft orientation.

Do not shoot an unfletched broadhead. Use a field point on a bare shaft. Shoot broadheads from a finished, fletched hunting arrow into a broadhead-rated target. I use the BIGshot Pro Hunter 18 for this job.

My Beginner Rule

I start with the shaft maker’s guidance and build one finished arrow before I fletch the batch. An index mark gives me the first position to try. A shaft made without a required index lets me go straight to vane clearance and shooting. With an unmarked shaft that gives me trouble, I test it in 90-degree positions and keep the position that repeats.

You can use the Everyday Arrow Planner to check weight, FOC, dynamic spine, and component fit before you buy the parts. Build one arrow from that plan. If it clears the rest, joins the field-point group, and shoots the broadhead well, finish the batch.
