What Is a Bow Sight Scope?
A bow sight is the complete aiming unit attached to the bow. The scope is the round housing you look through. Depending on the system, that housing can hold a pin, several pins, an aiming dot, a lens, a level, a light, and different shades or covers.
The scope is not just decoration. It controls the sight picture you see at full draw. A good setup helps you center the housing inside the peep, find the pin quickly, check the bubble, and stay focused on a small aiming point. A poor match can look dark, blurry, crowded, or difficult to center.
The sight does the moving
The slider, windage, elevation, mounting bar, locks, and sight tape position the scope and move your point of impact.
The scope builds the picture
The housing, pin or dot, lens, level, shade, and light determine what you see while aiming.

Decide What You Need the Scope to Do
Start with the job, not the accessories. My setup is built for whitetail hunting, tight cover, low-light shot windows, and the single-pin system I already trust. A target archer may make a very different choice.
- Hunting: Favor durability, a fast sight picture, useful low-light performance, and simple aiming references.
- 3D or target shooting: More magnification, a smaller dot, longer shades, and more exact light control may help.
- Hybrid use: A modular scope with removable cartridges or lenses lets you change the setup without replacing the sight.
There is no prize for putting the most parts on your bow. Every added piece should solve a problem you can name.
Check These Five Compatibility Points Before Buying
This is where most expensive mistakes happen. A product title may say “fits Axcel” while the rod, housing, lens, or cartridge is meant for a different model. Check all five points.
- Sight model: Confirm the exact model and generation. Landslyde, Landslyde Plus, AccuTouch, and Driver parts are not automatically identical.
- Scope connection: Check the rod diameter or thread pattern. Many target-style scopes use a 10-32 rod, while some compatible systems need a brand-specific rod.
- Housing: Match the accessory to AVX-41, AVX-31, UV3, UV3XL, or the exact housing you own.
- Lens and retainer: Buy by the manufacturer’s listed scope compatibility. Do not assume a generic “41mm” or “1¾-inch” listing includes the correct retaining hardware.
- Pin or cartridge: Confirm pin diameter, color, orientation, handedness, and whether it can be used with the lens you want.
The Axcel Landslyde and AVX-41 Build Path

The Landslyde gives you the slider, locks, axes, sight tapes, and return-to-zero function. The AVX-41 is the modular scope housing. Together, they give you a strong starting point, but the exact package determines what is already included.
The AVX-41 can be built around a single ring pin, a Ranger-style multi-reference pin, or a lens-only aiming system. Axcel also offers a rheostat cover, lens spacer and retainer, level blank, shades, and a light connection. This is why two AVX-41 scopes can look and function very differently.

Yes, if you use the correct connection. ULTRAVIEW sells a scope rod with a .490-inch option for Axcel sights. That rod is the bridge between the Landslyde and a compatible UV scope. Do not order the scope first and assume the included rod will match your Axcel.
The UV3 and UV3XL systems use removable cartridges. That can be useful if you want to move between single-pin, multi-pin, lens, and target-style configurations. The UV3XL is the larger system and offers a wider sight picture. ULTRAVIEW also lists 0x, 2x, 4x, 6x, and 8x lens choices for compatible cartridges.
What you need to check
- Choose a UV3 or UV3XL scope made for your hunting or target use.
- Select the .490-inch Axcel option on the ULTRAVIEW scope rod.
- Choose a pin or lens cartridge that is compatible with that exact UV housing.
- Confirm the cartridge accepts the lens or pin layout you want.
- Install it, then level and re-zero the complete sight.
ULTRAVIEW is not automatically “better” than the AVX-41. It is another modular path. The AVX-41 makes sense if you already own the complete Landslyde package and want to add a lens or shade. The UV path makes sense if you value fast cartridge changes or prefer its pin and lighting system.
Housing Size, Peep Size, and the Sight Picture
At full draw, I want the outside edge of the scope housing to center naturally inside my peep. That creates another alignment check without forcing me to think about it. If the scope looks too small inside the peep, too large to center, or shadowed on one side, the problem may be the relationship between peep size, housing size, draw length, anchor, and sight-bar position.
- A larger housing can be easier to find, but it can also require a larger peep.
- Moving the scope farther from your eye makes it appear smaller inside the peep.
- Moving it closer makes it appear larger.
- A smaller peep may improve precision in good light but can make the picture darker.
- Your anchor must stay repeatable before you blame the hardware.
Make these checks at full draw with the bow safely pointed at a target. Bench alignment only gets you close. Your actual anchor decides what you see.
Pin, Dot, Fiber, and Cartridge Options
The aiming point should be easy to find without covering more of the target than necessary. A .019 pin is normally easier to see in hunting light. A .010 pin covers less of the target and may feel more precise, but it can be harder to find when light fades.

How Much Bow Sight Magnification Do You Need?
A magnified lens makes the target appear larger. It also makes your pin movement look larger. That movement was always there. The lens simply makes it easier to see. Some archers settle into a better aim with that feedback. Others start trying to force the pin to stop and shoot worse.

For me, 4x is the sweet spot. I can see the target with more definition, but the setup still feels like a hunting sight. I would tell a beginner to start with no lens or 2x, prove the bow and shot process, and move to 4x only when there is a clear reason.
Clarifier vs. Verifier: Which One Works With a Scope Lens?
These two parts are often confused. A clarifier works with a magnified scope lens to sharpen the target image. A verifier is more like reading glasses in the peep and is normally used to sharpen the pins for an archer whose near vision has changed.
- Blurry target after adding magnification: test a compatible clarifier.
- Blurry pins without a scope lens: test a verifier.
- Dark or shadowed picture: check peep size, housing alignment, and anchor before changing lens strength.
- Both pin and target look wrong: have a qualified pro shop help you test combinations at full draw.
Specialty Archery makes clarifiers and verifiers for its compatible peep housings. The stronger the scope lens, the more likely the complete optical system needs to be matched carefully. Do not buy a clarifier by color or strength alone and expect it to work with every peep.
Sunshades, Glare, Light, and the Bubble
A sunshade can reduce glare and keep light from washing across the lens. It can also make the housing darker near the beginning or end of legal shooting time. That is why I test the complete setup in the same light I expect to hunt.
My aftermarket shade did what I needed. It reduced glare, stayed tight, and held up through the season. I would still remove or change it if it cost me a clear sight picture during the best hunting window. The accessory works for the system—not the other way around.
- Check the pin and target in direct sun.
- Turn toward backlighting and look for flare.
- Test under tree cover during the last legal minutes.
- Confirm the bubble is visible without pulling your focus away from the pin.
- Check local laws before adding any sight light or electronic component.

OEM vs. Aftermarket Bow Sight Scope Parts
I do not believe every useful part has to come in an OEM package. My 4x lens and sunshade were aftermarket eBay purchases. I paid much less, installed them, verified the fit, and hunted with them for a full season. They worked.
That does not mean I treat every component the same. A lens, shade, cover, or non-structural spacer can be a reasonable place to compare aftermarket value. A mounting bar, scope rod, lock, or other part that keeps the sight attached and aligned is where I want proven materials and exact fit.

Where I save and where I do not
I will compare aftermarket: lenses, sunshades, protective caps, simple covers, and other non-structural parts after checking measurements.
I prefer proven OEM or established brands: the sight, mounting bar, scope rod, windage and elevation hardware, lens-retaining system, and anything that can shift zero if it fails.
The Right Installation Order
Changing several parts at once makes it hard to know what caused a problem. I use a simple order and verify each stage before moving on.
- Tune the bow first. A scope cannot fix a bow or arrow setup that will not repeat.
- Mount the sight and scope securely. Confirm the correct rod, threads, hardware, and clearance.
- Install the pin or cartridge. Check orientation and brightness before adding the lens.
- Install the lens with the correct spacer and retainer. Keep fingerprints, dust, and grit away from the lens.
- Match the peep and optical system. Test the clarifier or verifier only if your eye needs it.
- Level first, second, and third axis. Do this before building a final sight tape or zero.
- Zero the sight. Start close, move to your normal zero, and confirm at several distances.
